Kissinger favored a very pragmatic approach to foreign policy, far from being an isolationist, he nevertheless achieved to bring about the lowest point of tension between the united States and the USSR;

Both Nixon and Kissinger started diplomatic discussions with China and its leader Mao, it is probably one of their greatest achievement apart from ending the Vietnam War due to popular pressure. They also succeeding in splitting completely the alliance between the USSR and Communist China.
