In an extremely brutal fashion.

Explanation:

As with their attitude to all conquered nations, The Japanese imposed their militaristic culture and Bushido code in a brutal fashion.

A particularly horrific example was the use of Korean women as "comfort women"; a euphemism for forced prostitution. In other words these women were regularly raped, often en masse by Japanese soldiers daily.

Even today many are trying to get an admission let alone compensation from the Japanese government for the torture and trauma they suffered.
