The Moral Majority was created by Jerry Falwell in 1979, it was focused on the defence of traitional religious values. It convinced many religious people to support the Republican Party. The Left was indeed seen as the political side which supported the liberation of morals.
They promoted a countercultural revolution to abolish the effects the counterculture of the sixties, though they never used those terms. The Christian Right developed in the eighties and nineties and became fierce opponent of the Progressive Left.
