Roots help aeration, animals help aeration too.

Explanation:

Most plants need the oxygen (air) to be in the soil pores where roots are growing. Inadequate aeration might be seen in poorly drained soils, clayey soils after precipitation or irrigation, when wet deep subsoils of clayey type, fine textured soils which are compacted, and massive deeper portions of clayey soils.

Animals (subsoil ones) help aeration of soil too. When they dig soil or open tunnels inside it, they mix downside soil and upside soil. Sometimes they submerge, this points are seen by naked eye. Such places are aerated. It is easier to get soil by a shovel at such places (yes I have done it recently).
