# How do find the quotient of (6x + 9) div (2x + 3)?

Oct 28, 2015

3

#### Explanation:

There are two methods that I know of.

One from the old school is to conduct long division. As far as I can ascertain this site's formatting capabilities would make that hard to present.

The other is to factorise and see if we can cancel out.

Lets try the latter:

Write as:

$\frac{6 x + 9}{2 x + 3}$

But $6 x + 9 = 3 \left(2 x + 3\right)$

Substitute giving:

$\frac{3 \left(2 x + 3\right)}{2 x + 3}$

$3 \times \frac{2 x + 3}{2 x + 3}$

but

$\frac{2 x + 3}{2 x + 3} = 1$

leaving just 3 as the answer
