Explanation:

A fossil from 1 million years ago may look similar to a fossil from 400 000 years ago, and that one may look similar to a species that is alive today, only that there are some differences.
Therefore, they must be related.

There is also something called homologous structures. Fish have fins, birds have wings, humans have hands. But if you look closely, you can see that all have the same skeleton parts, just smaller or in different shapes.
This proves that we all shared a common ancestor.
