I can think of two ways off the top of my head.

The first is to use white text to put in space. For example, the line

$3 x + 2 = 5 \textcolor{w h i t e}{X X X X X X}$ Subtract $2$ from both sides.

Without the hashtags, this is 3x+2=5color(white)(XXXXXX). The X's, in white, create the space between the math and the line of text.

Another method which does the same thing in a slightly different way would be to fill the space with spaces, still within the hashtags.

The line

$3 x + 2 = 5 \text{ "" "" "" "" }$ Subtract $2$ from both sides.

Is created, without the hashtags, by 3x+2=5" "" "" "" "" ". Here, each " " is one space that creates a little white space.
