Scientists know how old the Sun is by looking at the age of the entire solar system.

It is very likely that the entire solar system formed as one unit. Therefore, the age of the Sun has to be around the age of the Earth or the age of meteors. For example, the oldest fossils, found in Australia, are about 3.5 billion years old. This would mean that the Sun has to be at least 3.5 billion years. G.J. Wasserburg, an American geologist, obtained a meteoritic age of 4.57 billion years. By looking at these dates, we can get an idea of just how old the Sun is. This is how most estimates of the Sun's age have come out to be around 5 billion years.
