# How do you add 2sqrt18 + 5sqrt32?

Apr 1, 2015

Both of the given radicals can be simplified and the resulting radicals are the same value
$\sqrt{18} = \sqrt{3 \cdot 3 \cdot 2} = 3 \sqrt{2}$
and
$\sqrt{32} = \sqrt{4 \cdot 4 \cdot 2} = 4 \sqrt{2}$

So
$2 \sqrt{18} + 5 \sqrt{32}$

$= 2 \cdot 3 \sqrt{2} + 5 \cdot 4 \sqrt{2}$

$= 26 \sqrt{2}$
