#(5y^2+6y+9)-(3y^2+8y-5)+(-2y^2-6y-2)=#

#(5y^2-3y^2-2y^2)+(6y-8y-6y)+(9+5-2)#

You will note that the signs of SOME of the terms have changed, because #-(x-y)=y-x# etc.

#(5y^2-3y^2-2y^2)+(6y-8y-6y)+(9+5-2)#

#=cancel(5y^2-3y^2-2y^2)+(cancel(6y)-8y-cancel(6y))+(9+5-2)#
