You may first add all the 'wholes' and then the fractions

Explanation:

#=(3+1+4) + (3/4+1/8+1/2)#

The 'wholes' part will be #8#

It's easy to see that the common denominator for the fractions part will be #8#, so we multiply the other fraction by 'disguised' #1#'s:
#3/4xx2/2=6/8and1/2xx4/4=4/8#

Adding all, this gives #6/8+1/8+4/8=11/8=8/8+3/8=1 3/8#

Now add the 'wholes' partfrom before:

#=8+1 3/8=9 3/8#
