The absolute value of a positive number (or zero) is the number itself.
$\left\mid 27.8 \right\mid = 27.8$

The absolute value of a negative number is the negative of the negative number.
For example
$\left\mid - 27.8 \right\mid = - \left(- 27.8\right) = 27.8$
