Write the square out as a multiplication and apply the distributive property as follows:

${\left(x - 2 y\right)}^{2}$

$= \left(x - 2 y\right) \times \left(x - 2 y\right)$

$= x \left(x - 2 y\right) - 2 y \left(x - 2 y\right)$

$= {x}^{2} - 2 x y - 2 x y + 4 {y}^{2}$

$= {x}^{2} - 4 x y + 4 {y}^{2}$
