# How do you simplify 5x + 8 + 2x -3?

In an expression, you only can add and subtract values that have the same variable. (e.g. $x$$+ 8 x$=$9 x$)
$5 x + 8 + 2 x - 3$
From the expression , we can see that $5 x$ & $2 x$ have the same variable of $x$. Thus, we can add or subtract these 2 values!
$5 x + 8 + 2 x - 3$ = $7 x + 5$
