# How do you simplify 6-2(n+4)?

Apr 10, 2015

The order of operations is

1. expressions inside parentheses
2. exponentiation (left to right)
3. multiplication and division (left to right)
4. addition and subtraction (left to right)

For the expression $6 - 2 \left(n + 4\right)$
1. the expression inside parentheses can not be simplified
2. there are no exponents
3. multiplication $\rightarrow 6 - 2 n - 8$
4. subtraction: $\rightarrow - 2 - 2 n$

then simplify be extracting the common factor from the terms:
$\left(- 2\right) \left(1 + n\right)$
