You are trying to get to the point where

#8x +1 = 9" "# is the same and a bit easier to work with.

To get rid of the #1# on the left. subtract #1#,

but because the equation has to stay balanced you have to
subtract #1# from BOTH sides

#8x +1 color(red)(-1) = 9color(red)(-1)#

So now, # "8x = 8#

Divide both sides by #8# to get just #x# on its own:

#(8x)/8 = 8/8" "# which gives you the answer!
