We can add the left sides of both equations, and the right sides:

$2 x + y = 3$

$x - \cancel{y} + 2 x + \cancel{y} = 12 + 3 \to$
$y$ is now eliminated:
$3 x = 15 \to x = 15 \div 3 = 5$
$2 \cdot 5 + y = 3 \to y = 3 - 10 = - 7$
