$y = x - 5$ is equation 1
$4 x + 2 y = 8$ is equation 2

$4 x + 2 x - 10 = 8$
$4 x + 2 x = 8 + 10$
$6 x = 18$
$x = \frac{18}{6}$
$x = 3$
To find the value of y, substitute the value for x in equation 1 or 2 but I'll use equation 2 because it is easier and requires less calculations.
$y = x - 5$
$y = 3 - 5$
$y = - 2$
