How do you use area models to divide #720 div 12#?

You construct an "area" of 12 - say a 3x4 piece, and then see how many you can put into an area of 720 - maybe a 180x4 piece.


Some people find the visual method easier to understand. I think that an example might help, but after that, in practical terms it is simpler to use division directly. Other aids like common factors or ratios may help, but an actual "area model" usually is more work than value beyond the initial example.

In this example, with the pieces I proposed, you would see that 60 of your "12" area pieces would completely and exactly fill the "720" area block.
