How does alcohol affect the heart?

1 Answer

There are both positive and negative effects of alcohol on the heart. The quantity consumed has a large and direct bearing on what effects you can get.

Explanation:

There are both positive and negative effects to how alcohol affects the heart. A lot of the positive effects disappear with drinking that is classified as more than moderate (no more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day).

The positive benefits seem to centre around a decrease in the amount of coronary heart disease (which is when the oxygen supplying arteries to the heart get plugged up with cholesterol and other build ups and essentially starve the heart for oxygen).

The negative detriments to alcohol seem to centre around the effects from breaking down the alcohol - that process and the chemicals produced weaken heart tissue and so can scar the heart or make it pump much less effectively.
