It holds together galaxies, solar systems, etc.

Dark matter is what causes the universe to expand, gravity is what holds things together, it holds together galaxies, star systems, stars, planets, etc. The rate of expansion in the universe is currently increasing and one theory is that when the force of dark matter finally overcomes the force of gravity everything in the universe will eventually be torn up and it will be impossible for particles to form anything.
