How does one know a rational function say : 3/x-2, specifically x-2, how do you if it's positive or negative? (specifically x-2)

I'm basically trying to figure out the positive and negative intervals as well as when it's decreasing and increasing, which i already know how, however, this idea has always been bothering me in math class, is there really no way of finding out?
