There are several mechanisms, including hair, melanin and moisture.

Explanation:

The integumentary system provides several mechanisms to protect us from the suns rays.

Beginning with hair that helps to filter the sun's rays from the outer surface of the skin.

The cornfield layer are flat dry dead cells that form an outer wall of keratin and melanin enriched cells.

The layer of dying cells holds sets the melanin produced by the melanocytes of the germinative layer. Melanin coats the cells and filters harmful UV light.

The germinative layer produces new cells by mitosis, and creates a moisture enriched layer that keeps the tissue layers below from drying out through desiccation.
