when the body produces excess heat or during the summer time, relaxation of smooth muscle cells in wall of superficial blood vessels cause it to dilate thus increasing the surface area and enabling the heat to escape from the blood to the skin and out into the environment.

during cold season, contraction of smooth muscle cells in wall of blood vessels cause it to constrict thus reducing the surface area and conserving the heat.
