Glycolysis is an oxygen independent metabolic pathway . The entire glycolysis pathway consists of two phases :
Phase 1) this is the preparatory phase in which ATP is consumed.
Phase 2) in this phase ATP is produced.

The second phase of glycolysis is called the pay off phase. This is characterised by a net gain of energy rich molecules ATP and NADH.
