How many states did Obama win?

1 Answer

In 2008, he won 28 states plus the District of Columbia
In 2012, he won 26 states plus the District of Columbia

Explanation:

President Obama has been in 2 presidential races, winning them both.

In 2008, he won 28 states plus the District of Columbia
In 2012, he won 26 states plus the District of Columbia

Keep in mind that it isn't the number of states a candidate wins in order to win the Presidency. Instead, it's the number of votes in the Electoral College, which are representatives voters vote for to elect the President. It isn't done by the number of states won (that would be unfair to the states with a high population - a vote in a low population state would, in effect, be worth more than a vote in a high population state) nor is it done by the total number of votes cast (also called the Popular Vote).

In 2008, Obama received 365 electoral votes (vs 173 for McCain)
In 2012, Obama received 332 electoral votes (vs 206 for Romney)
