Crossing over is the process where two chromosomes of a homologous pair exchange equal segments with one another.

When this occur, it results in new combination of genes derived from both parents. Overtime, the selected traits are those that plays an advantage towards the individual survival, making it a dominant trait. As you know, dominant traits have higher chances of being passed down. And the process continues throughout generations, ensuring the organism existance.
