How to deal with Math phobia?

A couple of thoughts...

Explanation:

I am a mathematician, not a psychologist or counsellor (though my middle name does mean protector/counsellor), but I guess that it may be helpful to identify where the fear or dislike of mathematics has come from. Perhaps then you can separate the fear from the mathematics.

That having been said here are a few thoughts...

  • There is always mathematics that is more difficult than you can understand, but there are fun, interesting things in mathematics at any level.

  • You may think that you need special skills to think abstractly or do mathematics in general. Perhaps it will encourage you if you realise that you are already doing a lot without even realising it. For example, the very idea of numbers is an abstraction.
