Women had more rights constitutionally speaking than in Western countries.

Explanation:

In 1917 Communism brought a certain number of feminist reforms, women were given equal rights as men. This was to be continued under Stalin(apart from the act that he oulawed abortion).

Equality does not mean liberty and women were not free as individual liberties were not respected in Stalin's Soviet Union.
