If an electron is formally lost, another species will formally gain an electron....

Explanation:

And thus a redox equation has occurred, which are conceived to proceed on the back of electron loss, #"oxidation"#, and electron gain, #"reduction"#...

And just to provide an example, we use oxidation numbers to assess the gain or loss of electrons... Metallic zinc COULD reduce nitrate anion to give ammonia...

#"Oxidation half equation:"#

#Zn(s) rarr Zn^(2+) + 2e^(-)# #(i)#

#"Reduction half equation:"#

#stackrel(V^+)NO_3^(-) +9H^+ + 8e^(-) rarr stackrel(""^(-)III)NH_3(aq)+3H_2O(l)# #(ii)#

And we take #4xx(i)+(ii)....#

#4Zn(s) +NO_3^(-) +9H^+ rarr 4Zn^(2+) +NH_3(aq)+3H_2O(l)#

...which I think is balanced with respect to mass and charge, as indeed it must be if we represent an actual chemical reaction...
