split the shape into two rectangles:

then you have two areas:
#x*10#
#x*6#

the shaded area is given as #48cm^2#

#(x*10) + (x*6) = 48#

#10x+6x = 48#

#16x = 48#

divide by #16#:

#x = 3#

putting in units, #x = 3cm#
