Manifest Destiny is an expression coined by John O'Sullivan. It led to the expansion of the USA after the war against Mexico.

Explanation:

Between 1845 and 1848, President Polk led his country in a conflict against Mexico. Though Mexican troops outnumbered American troops one to three, the Mexicans forces were completely overwhelmed by American military force.

The USA had a technological superiority against Mexico. The whole SouthWest was conquered from Mexico despite a 15 million dollars payment in return. One fourth of the USA size was therefore added in one conquest as Mexico lost a third of its territory.

The idea of "Manifest Destiny" was retaken by Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. This notion therefore conveyed the idea that America had a special destiny, it was meant to spread Democracy throughout the world.

American Progress, an 1872 painting by John Gast, is an allegorical representation of the modernization of the new west. Here Columbia, a personification of the United States, leads civilization westward with American settlers.

"Manifest Destiny" is sometimes used to describe American Imperialism. The triumph of civilization enabled by the conquest of the West was thus shown as similar to the new conquest of the American Empire that spreads its values and Democracy all over the world.
