Earth-Moon-Sun alignment. It happens on a New Moon day.

Explanation:

Sun is hidden to a narrow surface band of the Earth by Moon, during

the solar eclipse. The Moon is nearer to the Earth and smaller.

Despite that the larger Sun is far away, the Moon's umbra ( shadow

cone ) does not sweep the surface of the Earth in every New Moon

day, for hiding the Sun. A near-perfect alignment

Earth----------Moon--------------------------------------------------------------Sun

is a prerequisite, for the occurrence of solar eclipse.
