Major political, social and economic

Urbanization is the first crucial feature-the population moved from the rural areas to the cities. Technology led to unemployment as machines replaced men in the fields and work became available in the factoriesnewly built in the cities.

Socially speaking the society was transformed into a society made of industrial workers and of fewer agricultural workers. It led to new social tensions with unions and strikes for instance. Poverty became apparent in the cities. Society became more and more unequal as the rich got richer. The "Robber Barons" controlled entire sectors of the economy and were immensely rich.

Politically speaking those magnates had a major influence on politicians in Washington. The building of the railroads and the Indian Wars it caused was made possible thanks to their lobbying and their investments.
