# Is 1/2xy = 2 an inverse or direct variation?

Inverse variation.

#### Explanation:

$\frac{1}{2} x y = 2$

color(blue)( xy = 4
color(blue)( y = 4/x

Here, $x \mathmr{and} y$ are variables and $4$ is the constant.
Let us assume values for $x$ and observe the trend in values of $y$

1. Let $x = 1$ , $y = \frac{4}{1} = 4$
2. Let $x = 4 , y = \frac{4}{4} = 1$
3. Let $x = 8 , y = \frac{4}{8} = \frac{1}{2}$

We can observe here, that as the values of $x$ increase, the values of $y$ decrease and hence the variation is inverse (if one increases other decreases.)
