Potential difference:- the work done per unit charge
to move a charge between the negative and positive
terminal of a battery, This energy is called potential

They're the same thing. Look at the units.

They have their uses in current contexts: eg It is hard to imagine a potential drop in a circular loop as the symmetry bedazzles.

Convention as between industries doesn't change this fact.
