As an endocrine gland , it produces various hormones (including insulin and glucagon) that circulate in the blood stream and aid in glucose metabolism.

As part of the digestive system , it secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to aid in the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids and the absorption of nutrients.
