In terms of it's anatomical location, it is superior (above) the kidneys.
It is located between the stomach and diaphragm, by the 9th and 11th ribs.

It is also said to be located in the left hypochondrium - this means it is in the left of the upper quadrant (the top quarter of the torso - see image). This leaves it just under the left ribcage.
