A living organism is able to reproduce information.

Explanation:

The key to a living organism is the ability to reproduce information. The organism must have an information code that dictates the functions of the organism. This information code must be able to be reproduced so the organism can create new cells.

The second law of thermodynamics states that everything goes from order to disorder. An organism or cell is a highly structured system. The laws of disorder will cause the organism or cell to "die" or lose function. There must be a complex information system to repair the resulting disorder and absorb energy from outside the organism to maintain homeostasis.

The question of virus is a puzzle. Virus contain complex information but not enough to reproduce independently. Virus must invade another organism or cell and use that organisms information in order to reproduce. How to justify a virus as a living cell is difficult . But also to justify a virus as non living is even harder. Can we call a virus a Zombie organism neither alive nor non living?
