After Mr. and Mrs. Simon each had 0.1 of the pie there was:

#1.0 - 0.1 - 0.1 = 0.9 - 0.1 = 0.8# pie remaining

If his daughter had #2/5# of the pie we can subtract:

#2/5 = 0.4# from the remaining pie to find out how much pie is left:

#0.8 - 0.4 = 0.4# of the pie remaining.
