Should we devote time and money to building a space station on the moon or Mars? Why or why not?

Frankly speaking being on a planet where 6 persons have the wealth possessed by half population of the world,where poverty strikes millions a say,spending of crores of money for the space station does not seem morally correct.but without scientific progress we cannot progress to make a poverty free world.Thus eradication of poverty and development of science must go hand in hand,but as it is evident in most cases it does not happen and here the difference between developed and under developed countries occurs.
