Wu Zetian ruled as Emperor of China from 690 to 705 AD

Explanation:

Confucian beliefs opposed the idea that any woman could be an emperor. However, shortly after Wu Zetian married the Emperor Kao Tsung, he suffered a stroke and Wu Zetian assumed (unofficial) control of China in his name.

Later, after Kao's death, when Wu and Kao's son abdicated, Wu Zetian was proclaimed Emperor.
