The term CARBOHYDRATE literally means "carbon with water".

The base formula or empirical formula for a carbohydrate is

#CH_2O#

Carbon with 2 Hydrogen and 1 Oxygen

#C + H_2O#

Typical carbohydrates include

Glucose #C_6H_12O_6#
Maltose #C_12H_22O_11#
Ribose #C_5H_10O_5#

Carbohydrates are sugars that are used primarily as the first source of energy cellular respiration.

I hope this was helpful.
