The major functions of the skeletal system are support, protection to soft tissues, movement, blood cell production and mineral homeostasis.

Explanation:

Support
The skeleton provides structural support to the entire body.

Protection
Most of the soft tissues of the body are protected by bony structures.
e.g. the heart and lungs are protected by the rib cage.
The brain is protected by the skull.

Movement
Bones are attached to muscles. Together they bring about voluntary movements of the various body parts.

Blood cell production
Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow of the long bones.

Mineral homeostasis
Bones store calcium and phosphorous. These are released into the blood stream when needed by the human body.
