comets are dirty snow balls orbiting Sun at far away known Oort's cloud.

Explanation:

Due to some shock wave they change direction and move towards Sun..Most of them orbit Sun and go back.many comets are attracted by planets and instead of going back orbit Sun in orbit near Neptune,They are called short period comets and come back at regular period.
