# What are some examples of oxidation reactions?

Apr 23, 2015

Essentially any combustion reaction.

Oxidation is not to be confused with Oxidisation.
Although they are vaguely linked, they have different definitions. Oxidation is the gaining of oxygen and, as combustion is reacting something with oxygen, this would be involved in combustion reactions:

$2 M g + {O}_{2} \to 2 M g O$

Combustion reactions are defined as 'reactions that occur when a substance reacts with oxygen, releasing energy in the form of heat and light.' (click the definition for the source.)

More examples include:

$C {H}_{4} + 2 {O}_{2} \to C {O}_{2} + 2 {H}_{2} O$
${C}_{2} {H}_{5} O H + 3 {O}_{2} \to 2 C {O}_{2} + 3 {H}_{2} O$

These, and more examples, can be found here.
The above equations are balanced.

I hope you find this useful! I'm not a teacher so if there is anything I have missed, someone else can help us both out!
