People with sleep apnea have problems with excessive day time sleepiness, impaired alertness and vision problems.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep.

Symptoms:
- loud snoring
- episodes of breathing cessation
- abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath
- awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
- morning headache
- insomnia
- hypersomnia
- attention problems
- irritability

If left untreated, people could be at increased risk of other health problems, such as diabetes. Death can occur from untreated sleep apnea due to lack of oxygen to the body.
