Jim Crow law were imposed upon African Americans, they were segregationist laws which consisted of forced separation in public places and discrimination. Segregation was an institution in the states that had been part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was forbidden for them to marry whites. They had separate schools, separate waiting rooms and had to sit in the back in buses or in a different compartment in trains.

Because that system most African Americans were slaves, slavery lasted much longer in Southern states. The agricultural sector and crops such as cotton or tobacco long relied on this immoral system.
