The Earth is made up of four different layers from inside outward:

  • The inner core under immense pressures that makes it solid despite its immense heat. It's made up of iron and nickel.
  • The outer core, like the inner core, is made up of nickel and iron but is liquid.
  • The mantle, part liquid and part solid, is just below the crust and fuels the processes of plate tectonics with its convection currents.
  • The crust is the the thin upper layer that we live on top of. Everything you probably consider Earth is likely located on or in the crust.
