You might see some of the old analytical balances (that were WIDESPREAD once in high schools) in antique shops; these were exquisite, and expensive instruments, the which required careful handling. The balances of today are solid-state.....and in fact a lot of these tend to be stolen from universities by drug dealers to weigh out their stash...
